Read Nehemiah 2
Focus on verses 8 -10
The phrase “resistance is futile” was made popular in the 1980’s when Star Trek was a popular television series. In one of the episodes the captain of the Enterprise is captured by an alien species called the Borg. The Borg are half human half machine and the machine part of them are all connected and controlled by a central computer brain. They grow in strength and number by overpowering other humans and adding them to their number by attaching the machine half to them so that they become one with the Borg. The phrase they mechanically repeat when they are invading human settlements is “resistance is futile”.
In today’s chapter of Nehemiah, we hear Nehemiah declare that the king provided what he requested because “the good hand of my God was upon me”. He also discovers that his project is meeting some resistance from some of the neighboring Arabs. While the resistance is serious, we get the idea as the chapter unfolds that it will be overcome because the Lord is with Nehemiah.
This is a valuable principle to understand as we learn to trust the Lord as He leads us through life’s journey. In some ways when the Lord is with us, any resistance that comes against us is truly futile, since there is nothing that can stand in the way of the Lord when He chooses to move.
