Genuine Power…

Read Luke 4staccoto_lightning

Focus on verse 36-37

We have a lot of thunderstorms in Florida. It is not uncommon for the power to be knocked out by a lightning strike every once in a while. Here is an observation I have made as a result. When it comes to power, its not hard to tell when it is on and when it is off. When the power is on, the lights and appliances in the house operate as they should. When it is not on, it becomes rather dark and quiet. The point being, there is no mistaking whether or not the power is on.

In today’s reading Luke describes how the people were amazed at the authority and power that Jesus wielded. There was no mistaking that with Jesus – the power was ON!

And they were all amazed and said to one another, “What is this word? For with authority and power he commands the unclean spirits, and they come out!” And reports about him went out into every place in the surrounding region. (v. 36-37)

As it was with Jesus, the same is true of those who claim to follow Him. There are some people of whom it is unmistakably clear that the spiritual power is connected! There are others that I have met where it seems a bit like a flashlight with a five year old battery. There is just enough power there to cause the bulb to glimmer a little, but it is not casting enough light to do anyone any good.

The reason some of us are low on power is not because God is experiencing an energy shortage. There is plenty of power available through the indwelling of the Holy Spirit if we only choose to submit ourselves to Him. The place where we trip up most often as followers of Jesus is that we assume that the power of the Holy Spirit is there for us to wield as we see fit. This is a serious misunderstanding.

There is plenty of power available, which the Holy Spirit is willing to wield through us, but only as we submit ourselves to His will in regard to how that power is used.
