Angel of Light…

Read 2 Corinthians 11                                                                                                                     Focus on verse 14-15d0aed261-3823-4ddf-bb3a-fd0739160ff2-1347-0000028b9856fa4b_tmp

What does it mean to be an angel of light? A true angel of light is a servant of God sent on a mission to carry out God’s will on earth. When something is disguised as an angel of light, it is actually another kind of angel. As far as I know there are only two kinds of angels, good angels, and evil angels.
One very common misconception about angels is that when we as humans die, we become angels. The biblical record does not support this idea. The Bible makes it fairly clear that angels are eternal spirit beings that were created by God for the purpose of serving Him. Humans are an entirely different species of being…also eternal beings, but created physical and spiritual. The physical part of us is temporal, the spiritual part eternal. It is the spiritual part of us that makes us who we are, and it is this part of us that will spend eternity either with God or separated from Him depending upon how we respond to Him as we live out the physical part of the journey.
Evil angels were originally created by God as good angels, but chose to follow the archangel named Lucifer in an attempt to overthrow God…big mistake…and got themselves tossed out of heaven. They have been trying to undermine and destroy what God created ever since. The remaining good angels continue to serve God by protecting us from the destructive efforts of Lucifer and his rebel army. It is a story that has all the makings of a great action movie.
In today’s reading Paul warns followers of Jesus to be wary of people who have been deceived by these evil spiritual beings, yet disguise themselves as angels of light in an attempt to deceive other people into following them instead of Jesus.

And no wonder, for even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light. So it is no surprise if his servants, also, disguise themselves as servants of righteousness. Their end will correspond to their deeds. (v.14-15)

It can become somewhat confusing, and as the return of Jesus Christ to earth draws nearer, the forces of evil will become increasingly desperate as they sense their time running out. Some of them attempt to convince us that they are really angels of light, but do not be deceived, their fruit will ultimately betray their allegiance, and the closer we stay to Jesus in relationship the easier it will be for us to recognize the true angels of light from the imposters.
