Read 2 Peter 2
Focus on verse 1-3
Internet and social media has been a great asset to humanity in many ways, but as has proven to be true of every advance of science and technology, there is always a dark side. When Einstein discovered that by splitting an atom vast amounts of energy could be generated it unleashed potential sources of energy that have done great good for humanity. This same energy also has the capacity for unbelievable destruction as the world discovered when we witnessed the horror of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
The internet has opened an avenue of communication that allows nearly anyone with an internet connection, an electronic device and a source of power to literally change the world with a single tweet. This opens a door of opportunity for people to use it for great good, it also has allowed people with evil intent to practice their craft with more efficiency as well.
It is in fact through the amazing miracle of the internet that you are able to read what I have written pretty much anywhere on the globe at any time of day or night. I have in this blog made every attempt to communicate truth in as much as I understand it. I typically do not attempt to deceive people in any way shape of form, but – there is little that would stop me if I chose to attempt to do so.
It used to be more common, but even recently I have received the occasional email, written in very poorly translated English, informing me that I have been chosen as the benefactor of some wealthy prince in Africa who has left his entire fortune to me if only I would reply to the email and provide all my personal banking information so that a copious amount of money can be transferred to my account. The intent of course is not to transfer money INTO my account, but OUT of it. This kind of deception has been around in various forms for years. It is so common that most tech savvy people can readily recognize it. As a result, it has become little more than a minor irritation.
It becomes more serious when issues of life and death are at stake. In today’s reading Peter warns his readers of false teachers who attempt to introduce destructive heresies and that many will follow them because they are unaware.
But false prophets also arose among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you, who will secretly bring in destructive heresies, even denying the Master who bought them, bringing upon themselves swift destruction. And many will follow their sensuality, and because of them the way of truth will be blasphemed. And in their greed they will exploit you with false words. Their condemnation from long ago is not idle, and their destruction is not asleep. (v. 1-3)
Peter also warns that these false teachers will destroy themselves along with those they are able to deceive. This is all the more reason to study and know the truth.
It has been claimed that people who are trained to recognize counterfeit money do not spend much time studying fake currency, but are extremely familiar with that which is genuine. This is a great object lesson for us as we attempt to recognize the difference between teaching that is true and that which is false. The best thing we can do is study the genuine article. The more familiar we are with God’s word, the more likely we will recognize heresy when we encounter it.
