Read 1 John 5
Focus on verse 13
Few things trip us up and cause us to fail as effectively as doubt. When we second guess ourselves and begin to believe the naysayers, we set ourselves up to fail. Sometimes we fail because we set unrealistic goals. Other times we fail simply because we do not believe we can succeed. There was a period in my life where I believe I was trained to expect to fail. It was not anything my parents did, it was in part an unhealthy public school environment, but mostly it was just that I chose not to believe I could succeed. In today’s reading John writes to believers who at times doubt their own belief system.
I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God that you may know that you have eternal life.(v. 13)
John is attempting to build our confidence in the written word as trustworthy. We can know that we have eternal life – if we choose to believe that what God says about Himself in His word is true. It really is that simple. It comes down to choosing to believe the truth about what is true. Jesus said I and the way, the truth, and the life. In this sense truth is not just what is factually true, but Truth is also the person of Jesus Christ. Doubt has no power in the presence of the Truth.
