The Rest of the Story…

I used to enjoy listening to Paul Harvey on the radio year ago. He was a great story teller and he always ended his presentation with the phrase; “And now you know…the rest of the story”. Some of the greatest story tellers don’t always tell the story in chronological order. Perhaps the most notable recent example of this is how the Star Wars feature films were created and released. The first trilogy told the middle of the story, the second trilogy followed in sequence, then most recently now the third trilogy of movies is going to the beginning to inform us of the history behind the story we now already know. This was also done in the way C.S Lewis’ seven book series Chronicles of Narnia were introduced. The method was also used in the creation and release of the Lord of the Rings movie series.
In today’s reading John relates a part of his vision which turns out to be the backstory that took place before the creation of the earth. It gives us a little historical information about how Satan and his hoard of demons became who and what they are.
Now war arose in heaven, Michael and his angels fighting against the dragon. And the dragon and his angels fought back, but he was defeated, and there was no longer any place for them in heaven. And the great dragon was thrown down, that ancient serpent, who is called the devil and Satan, the deceiver of the whole world—he was thrown down to the earth, and his angels were thrown down with him. (v. 7-9)
In the context of this chapter John describes how one third of the angels chose to follow Satan, who was formerly called Lucifer and was the most powerful and beautiful of the three archangels of God. Lucifer became proud and attempted to overthrow God, which turned out to be a huge mistake. After he realized he had lost and had been cast out of heaven, he flew into a rage to made war on the descendants of humanity, and essentially continues to this day to twist and destroy anything and all that he can of what God created to be good.
When Jesus died on the cross, I suspect Satan thought he had won, what Satan did not realize was that Jesus death and resurrection would seal his defeat and set humanity free from his destructive power once and for all. As a result of Jesus death, Satan lost his hold on humanity to where the only power he now has over us is the power to deceive us. The degree to which he can deceive us is the degree to which he can control us. This is what makes it so vitally important for us to know the Truth.
So, now you know the back story, or as Paul Harvey used to say on his old radio show; “Now you know…the rest of the story.”
