Ruling with Justice…

Read – 2 Samuel 23
Focus on verse 3b-485007082-E69C-4335-9A21-6FCE0C2CF065.png

When justice prevails in a nation the people prosper and the land flourishes. When honesty and integrity is rewarded, while corruption and deception is discouraged, people feel safe and tend to trust one another. When government is corrupted by greed, it breeds distrust and fear causing crime to become commonplace and everyone suffers. When corruption becomes the norm, there are no winners, and if it prevails, the nation ultimately collapses.
In today’s reading King David’s last words are recorded, and among them is this statement:

When one rules justly over men,
ruling in the fear of God,
he dawns on them like the morning light,
like the sun shining forth on a cloudless morning,
like rain that makes grass to sprout from the earth. (v. 3b-4)

“When one rules justly over men, ruling in the fear of God…” good things happen. When people are ruled justly and in the fear of God, they flourish and grow and multiply in strength, wisdom and numbers. King David knew this because he say it happen under his leadership.
So what happens then when people are ruled unjustly? What happens when the fear of God is abandoned and rulers abuse the power they have been trusted with? David also witnessed how that ended as he observed the reign of King Saul. There have been plenty of examples of this throughout history since that time. One needs only review the demise of Roman Empire, which was brought down not by a superior or more numerous army, though eventually a foreign army did march into Rome and destroy the city. By the time the city of Rome was sacked the empire had already been destroyed by the greed and narcissism of those who failed to rule justly.
As I observe the current toxic environment that appears to be paralyzing America’s law makers, it would seem that America has for some time been tracking on a similar course. With political correctness running amuck, with all things pertaining to God or morality being marginalized or silenced. Values that were previously considered helpful to healthy social interaction have been cast aside to make way for a politically correct set of ethics that confound and confuse turning right and wrong on it head. If current trends continue I suspect it won’t be long until America, like Roman and many other historical empires crumbles from within until it is no more. It won’t be a superior military force that comes in to take it over, the nation will merely collapse upon itself when the last remaining vestiges of morality and common sense are over run by the ignorant masses who know no better.
A nations that is sick with injustice is not beyond the grace of God. There is a solution,

“if my people who are called by my name humble themselves, and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and heal their land.” (2 Chronicles 7:14)

I suspect that if a leader were to arise who could lead the nation to repent, and to restore justice and the fear of God, it is entirely possible that these negative trends could be turned around. Time alone will reveal what God has in store for us.
